13 Goals of a Witch

The well known author Scott Cunningham (A WICCAN GO TO), first introduced the thirteen goals in his book WICCA, A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner.

The thirteen goals of a Witch are the guidelines that we base our lifestyle. Personally, I feel these are helpful to a Solitary Practitioner because they don’t have covens to tell them the rules or guidelines to live by in that coven. They are helpful to reflect on an assure yourself that you are on the right path.

The Thirteen Goals for a Witch:

1. Know Yourself:

What are you limits? What makes you happy? What are you not comfortable with? These are important things to know because in Wicca and Witchcraft the biggest “tool” you have is yourself, the magick comes from you.

2. Know your Craft:

Witchcraft is just that, a craft. You learn this by living and doing it, although reading and gaining knowledge on it are very important, it’s also just as important to put it to practice.

3. Learn and Grow:

Study, research, ask questions, whatever you need to do to continue learning about what you are interested in so that you can continue to grow from it. There is so much to Wicca and Witchcraft I feel the knowledge is never ending, even if you feel like you know it all or know enough keep an open mind because there’s always different approaches to things. Always remain teachable.

4. Apply Knowledge to Wisdom:

You can read all the books in the world, but until you but what you are reading to use in your everyday life you’ll never truly understand what you are trying to learn. Decide on which path you want to take for example I want to follow the Wiccan path, I’ve read many books on the matter but never felt like I was understanding it properly and that was because all I was doing was reading and not incorporating what I was learning. Be smart about how you are using your skills, one person’s way is not the only way, use your knowledge to know what is right for you.

5. Achieve Balance:

Take the time to make sure you are taking care of yourself. Don’t put all your time and energy into one area to the point you forget about everything else that needs to be taken care of to. Managing your personal energy is important so that you can keep a balanced and calm body, mind and spirit to accomplish the things you want.

6. Know your Words in Good Order:

A Witch’s word especially has power behind it, they are how we keep a bond. A Witch’s words are how they cast spells, make or break a vow, send blessings, and more. You should always be cautious of how you use your words, what you say either good or bad is what you are sending out to the universe to manifest. The power to praise and even curse is held or released through words so be mindful of how you use them.

7. Keep your Thoughts in Good Order:

Keeping your thoughts in order is important because what we think is what we manifest, so even if we do the most extravagant ritual for something positive to come your way if you are thinking thoughts of doubt or negativity then that is what the result will be. Our thoughts can have major impacts on our lives and wellbeing.

8. Celebrate Life:

Life is a gift, make the most of it! Celebrate the little things in life just as you would the big things. Acknowledge the hard times as well for they are lessons that will lead us in the right direction for over all good.

9. Attune with the Cycles of the Earth:

Celebrate the Sabbats and Esbats. You can get in tune with the Earth’s cycles by growing herbs, plants, observing the changing of seasons and life cycles of animals.

10. Breathe and Eat Correctly:

Knowing how to properly breathe and how to keep our body’s healthy are important because we want to be at our best while practicing our craft. Take care of not only your physical self but your spiritual self as well.

11. Exercise the Body:

Exercise helps to relieve stress which in return helps use to keep our mental state balanced.

12. Meditate:

There are a variety of ways to meditate, choose a method that works you for so that you can get the benefits from it. Meditation can be as simply as going for a walk.

13. Honor the God and Goddess:

Wicca is a religion so it is important to honor the God and Goddess in all things to include a spiritual aspect in magickal practices.
